New dates of Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games

In a press release published on March 30, authorities and the involved parties in the organization of Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games announce new dates for this international sport events that is postponed to 2021.

Due to the health alert caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, majority of competitions and sport events have been suspended. This also applies to Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games.

These major sport events expected by everyone were planned to take place from July 24 to August 9 for the Olympic Games, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 25 to September 6.

Through a teleconference meeting, the international Olympic committee, the international Paralympic committee, the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Government of Japan decided to set new dates for these events.

Therefore, Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021 and the Paralympic Games from August 24 to September 5, 2021.

According to the press release, the decision took into consideration 3 main factors:

  • Health protection of athletes and all participants as well as taking part in the international efforts to stop the spread of the virus
  • Safeguard the interests of the athletes and Olympic Sports
  • The international sport calendar
